How classroom licenses work

One teacher buys the license
Whoever purchases becomes the license owner. Seats and teacher slots are counted against their subscription.

Owner invites co-teachers (Grade / School)
Grade / Team licenses include up to 5 teacher accounts; School licenses include 25. Owner shares a T-XXXXXXXX invite code; co-teachers redeem at /teacher/team/join and get full Pro access for the license period.

Each teacher creates their own classes
Every class gets a unique 6-character student join code. All classes share the license's student seat pool (180 / 450 / 1,500).

Students join with a code — or bulk import
Students sign in with their own email or Google, then enter the class code at /join. Teachers can also paste a CSV roster to hand out one-time claim codes. Seat cap is enforced automatically — students beyond the cap are billed at +$2 / student / year.
Note: the Teacher tier is a single-teacher license. To invite co-teachers, choose Grade / Team or School.

How is Smart-Reader priced for teachers vs. individuals?
Individuals pay $9.99/month or $99/year. Teachers get a classroom license starting at $249/year for up to 180 students — about $1.40 per student for the entire year, sized for a real 6-period secondary schedule. Grade-team and school site licenses bring the per-seat price down further.
What if I go over my seat cap?
Extra students beyond your tier cap are billed at +$2 per student per year, prorated. You'll see the overage on your next invoice — or upgrade to the next tier at any time and Stripe prorates the difference.
How does Smart-Reader compare to Newsela, CommonLit, or ReadWorks?
Newsela runs $18–$25 and CommonLit runs $15–$30 per student per year for curated article libraries. Smart-Reader is a fraction of that price and works with any text you paste in — a chapter of a novel, a primary source, a poem, or a news article. Instead of a fixed article catalog, students get a personalized guided reading session for the text their class is actually studying.
How do students join a class?
Teachers share a 6-character class join code. Students sign in with their own email or Google, enter the code on the Join page, and they're in — no district-managed roster required.

What happens when a class license expires?
Teachers keep their account and library. Student seats simply pause until the license is renewed. No student work is deleted.
