Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how Smart-Reader.ai ("Smart-Reader", "we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use our website and services (the "Service"). By using Smart-Reader you agree to this policy.

Information we collect

We collect only what is necessary to run the Service: your email address (for account creation and authentication), the text you paste or upload for readings, your responses to reading questions, and basic usage data (page views, error logs). We do not collect precise location, advertising identifiers, or browsing history from other sites.

How we use information

We use your information solely to provide and improve the Service: generating readings, saving progress, producing essay outlines, processing payments, sending account-related email, and diagnosing errors. We do not sell personal information and we do not use student data for advertising.

AI processing

Smart-Reader uses third-party large language model providers (including Google and OpenAI) to generate driving questions, feedback, vocabulary, and outlines. Reading text and your responses are transmitted to these providers solely to produce the requested output. We do not authorize providers to use your content to train their models. AI output may be inaccurate or incomplete and should be reviewed.

Children's privacy (COPPA)

Smart-Reader is intended for users age 13 and older. Children under 13 may only use Smart-Reader through an account created and supervised by a parent, guardian, or teacher who has provided verifiable consent. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us without appropriate consent, contact privacy@smart-reader.ai and we will delete it.

Schools and FERPA

When a teacher or school uses Smart-Reader with students, the school is the data controller for student records. We act as a "school official" under FERPA, processing student information solely to provide the Service under the school's direction. We do not disclose student information except as needed to operate the Service or as required by law.

Data retention

We keep your readings and responses for as long as your account is active. If you delete a reading it is permanently removed. If you delete your account, all associated data is erased within 30 days, except where retention is required by law (for example, payment records).

Cookies and analytics

We use strictly necessary cookies to keep you signed in and to remember preferences. We may use privacy-respecting analytics to understand aggregate usage. We do not use advertising cookies or cross-site tracking.

Service providers

We use Stripe for payment processing, Supabase for secure data storage and authentication, and AI providers as described above. These providers access information only to perform services for us under contractual confidentiality obligations.

Your rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You may exercise these rights by emailing privacy@smart-reader.ai. We do not sell or "share" personal information as defined under the CCPA.

International users

Smart-Reader is operated from the United States. If you access the Service from another country, you consent to your information being processed in the United States, which may have different data protection laws than your jurisdiction.

Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be announced on the Service or by email.
